Take a listen to the windy and inventive new single by the Bay Area's Bells Atlas, who make an arty yet playful blend of afro-beat, soul, and (for lack of a better term) indie-rock. "Future Bones" creeps into view and builds slowly for the first 90 seconds, before taking an explosive turn with a blend of punchy bass, shimmery keyboards, hypnotic vocal harmonies, and intricate guitar parts.
Upon first listen, the song's outro sounds like drummer Geneva Harrison is pounding out Morse Code, until you realize that the whole thing is meticulously coordinated, with each member of the band emphasizing these difficult-to-follow syncopated beats.
"Future Bones" begs to be listened repeatedly. It feels like a short mystery, one that offers up fresh new sonic secrets every time you press play.
Bells Atlas' next show is on May 8th at The New Parish in Oakland. Their live set incorporates a combination of traditional performance and live-looping, which is fascinating to watch as audience member. Trying to discover what is going on as these talented musicians hop from instrument to instrument is both a physical and brain-twisting joy.
The band's new EP Hyperlust boasts awesome artwork by Sophie Roach and cover design by Erica Fink. It was recorded at Robot Envy Studios and Zoo Labs by Jacob Winik and Bijan Sharifi. Half of the record was co-produced/mixed by Akiyoshi Ehara (of The Seshen), and other half mixed by Jacob Winik. Hyperlust is out May 12th.
